This month, Inside Fashion Design is excited to feature 'The Conscious Closet' by Elizabeth L. Cline. This inspring book is a treasure trove for those keen on mastering the art of conscious consumption and design in the fashion industry. I've had the pleasure of owning this book for some time, but it was buried in my stack of 'books to read' on my bedside table. Now that I've taken the time to dig into its pages, I'm not only more fired up than ever to be a conscious consumer and designer but to follow her action steps for buildng my own "Conscious Closet". Learn how to join us below!
About the book: Cline's key themes include conscious consumption, sustainable practices, wardrobe management, second-hand and DIY fashion, and consumer advocacy. The book provides understandable definitions of fabrics and construction, the best places to donate, and ideas on how to work with your existing wardrobe. I was so inspired by her ideas and suggestions that I decided to follow her action steps and share my own journey. I invite you to participate in this journey together!

A favorite call out of "The Conscious Closet" is Clines discussing personality types to guide wardrobe choices. This aligns perfectly with our June Book of the Month: "Style Statement: Live by Your Own Design
by Carrie McCarthy and Danielle LaPorte." If you want a great book on defining your style, get yourself a copy of "Style Statement." This book helped me dig deep into defining my style, not only in my clothing but in my overall values as well (and it was fun to go thru the exercises of self-discovery!)
The Conscious Closet covers six main parts:
1. Goodbye Fast Fashion
2. The Art of Less
3. The Art of More
4. The Sustainable Fashion Handbook
5. Make it Last
6. The Fashion Revolution
Each part dives into the details, how to do, cheat sheets and actionable steps you can take. I particularly appreciate Cline's approach of not letting guilt overshadow the clothes we already own. She offers down-to-earth advice and guidance on making the most of your existing wardrobe or passing on items you no longer wish to wear responsibly.
"The Conscious Closet" offers actionable steps to create a wardrobe that reflects conscious living and supports our mission at Inside Fashion Design to promote conscious consumption & design.
